This article analyzes the criminalization of femicide in Ecuador in 2014 to determine whether this crime has been reduced. The cases of femicide from 2014 to 2024, their geographic distribution, the victim-perpetrator relationship, and the legal measures implemented were analyzed through a study based on statistical data from the Attorney General’s Office. This study used a mixedmethods
approach, with a quantitative analysis of official records, supplemented by doctrinal and legal studies on the impact of legislation. Risk factors, the socioeconomic context of victims, and the effects of public policies aimed at prevention were also analyzed. The findings revealed that the criminalization of femicide has not led to a significant reduction in this crime; on the contrary, cases have remained stable or even increased in some provinces. It was concluded that while legislation has helped raise awareness and sanction this crime, it has not been sufficient to eradicate it. The need for a comprehensive approach, combining education, prevention, and effective access to justice, is emphasized, rather than relying solely on punitive measures.
