Throughout time, humanity measures its earthly existence, composed of stages such as birth, growth, development, reproduction and death. This study aims to analyze the temporal perception of incarcerated individuals, from the perspective of the intensification of suffering. The research has a hypothetical-deductive methodological approach, starting from premises that materialize as possible answers and uses bibliographic and documentary techniques with monographic procedure. The problem guiding the research can be synthesized in the following question: in what aspects can time as a punishment intensify the suffering of the incarcerated individual? As an initial hypothesis, it is considered that, upon entering the prison system, the individual has a sentence counted in “time”, that is, years, months and days of serving his sentence in social isolation. In this hostile environment, the absence of external contact intensifies all temporal sensations. Thus, prison mortifies the individual's personal identity, conditioning him to no longer have his “time” of life available, a factor that prevents him from experiencing the basic cycles of human development outside the walls. The study demonstrates that grief affects not only the individual's body, but also the time and perception of life caused by the suffering experienced.
